The boundaries between public and private are blurring with the responsibilities of social development no longer in the hands of government. In the last several decades social finance and ethical investment have become increasingly important and sought after investment methods. For example portfolios with social investment started as early as 1984, which according to the Social Investment Forum were worth around $40 billion. This number grew to $639 billion a decade later and to $2.3 trillion in 2001.
