Carleton University is pleased to be once again offering Introductory KiSwahili courses – LANG 1010A, Intro to Language 1: Kiswahili, in the Fall term and LANG 1020A, Intro to Language 1: Kiswahili, in the Winter term.
This language is spoken by more than 60 million people in a number of countries in central and eastern Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. It is the second language of some 135 million more, making it the most widely used language in sub-Saharan Africa. This introductory course will cover oral skills as well as basic reading and writing skills. There will also be an important emphasis on cultural practices of Swahili-speaking people. The instructor for the course is Dr. Abdulwahid Mazrui (PhD, Indiana University), co-author of Swahili: A Complete Course for Beginners.
Dr. Abdulwahid Mazrui is originally from Zanzibar, Tanzania.He has a BA Education from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and did his PhD in Linguistics with a minor in African Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. He has taught KiSwahili both in Zanzibar and Arusha, Tanzania with the U.S. Peace Corps and all levels of KiSwahili (Elementary to Advanced) at Indiana University from 2003-2012. His research interests are in Sociolinguistics, Second Language Phonology, Second Language Acquisition and African Literature. He is co-author of the popular book, Swahili: A Complete Course for Beginners (2007).
