Sheryl Boyle

Associate Professor Sheryl Boyle supervises immersive materials research in concrete, cellulose, building lime, pigments and construction systems (both contemporary and historic) through teaching and research activities. She is Director of the CSALT materials research lab at Carleton and a member of the Concordia Centre for Sensory Studies where her research in sensory (re)construction and experiential learning explore ways of knowing architecture.

Research

Sheryl is currently the Primary Investigator for three unique MITACS funded research projects:

1.  A new grant (2020-2022) with the Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) supports student Sinan Husic to explore the use of 3D printing for Ultra-High Performance concrete in an iterative design process, 

2.  A new grant (2020-21) with Hurd Solutions and student Robin Papp to explore the use of net carbon negative hemp building in materials, and

3.  An ongoing research project (2018 – 2021) with Zeoform IP and graduate intern Jesse Bird explores the use of nano/micro fibrillated cellulose from hemp and recycled cardboard as a sustainable alternative building material for architecture.

Sheryl is also a part of the 2019 Interdisciplinary Sustainable Communities Research Cluster funded through Carleton’s Multidisciplinary Research Catalyst Fund. She was an investigator on the Urbandale Centre for Home Energy Research project which included funding from Canadian Foundation for Innovation, Ontario Research Fund, Urbandale Construction and many local sponsors.
