A Sample BA Undeclared First Year Schedule

Jim is about to register for his first year at Carleton and his major is the Bachelor of Arts Undeclared. He followed the First-Year Registration Steps and has some ideas about majors he might consider in the future. Jim is interested in:

Law
Political Science
Philosophy
Music
Psychology

He also read about Carleton’s First-Year Seminar options and likes the idea of having a class of only 30 students during his first year. So Jim will enroll in a FYSM in one of the topics that interests him.

Jim read the First Year Course Selection Guide and has decided to take the following courses:

LAWS 1000 – Introduction to Legal Studies (full year course)
FYSM 1602 – Selected Topics in Political Science (counts as a Political Science class, full year course)
PHIL 1500 – Contemporary Moral, Social and Religious Issues (full year course)
MUSI 1000 – Introduction to the Study of Music (fall semester course)
MUSI 1002 – Issues in Popular Music (winter semester course)
PSYC 1001 – Introduction to Psychology I (fall semester course)
PSYC 1002 – Introduction to Psychology II (winter semester course)

So Jim is enrolled in five classes each semester. During his first year of study, Jim can decide which degree program (or programs) he likes best and then change his major. After taking LAWS 1000, FYSM 1602, PHIL 1500, MUSI 1000/1002, and PSYC 1001/1002, Jim has fulfilled the first-year requirements to change his major to Law, Political Science, Philosophy, BA in Music, or Psychology. He can also decide to do a Combined Honours program and major in more than one of these subjects.

He has also fulfilled the Breadth Requirement of completing 1.0 credit in three out of four breadth areas while taking his favourite classes. He took:

Breadth Area 1: Culture and Communication – MUSI 1000/1002
Breadth Area 2: Humanities – PHIL 1500
Breadth Area 3: Science, Engineering, and Design – none
Breadth Area 4: Social Sciences – LAWS 1000, FYSM 1602, PSYC 1001/1002
