Research Seminar: A Sociopolitical and Relational Approach to Studying Cooperation and Conflict on the Europe-Russia Border

The Jean Monnet Chair “EU’s Relations with Russia and the Eastern Neighbourhood” is pleased to be hosting an upcoming research seminar with Professor Magdalena Dembinska.
Abstract: Centered on geo-strategies, International Relations theories tend to exclude the possibility of cooperation and conflict taking place simultaneously, in Russo-European relations. To explain the variation of cooperation/conflict in time and space, this talk discusses: (1) the merits of a sociopolitical and relational approach and the importance of shifting the focus of inquiry from state-centred entities to practitioners; (2) a comparative research design, with three cases on/at the Russo-European border, Estonia, Moldova and Kaliningrad, since 1991.
Speaker Biography: Magdalena Dembinska is associate professor, Political Science, University of Montreal. She completed a postdoc at McGill (2007-2009), received her PhD from the University of Montreal and her Masters from Warsaw University. Her comparative research focuses on identity politics and conflict, state- and nation-building, nationalism and diversity, in Eurasia and Central Europe. She has published Vivre ensemble dans la diversité culturelle with Presses universitaires de Rennes (2012).
This research seminar is geared towards doctoral students and their supervisors, as well as EURUS MA students interested in the research.
