It is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend this year’s annual Carleton Model NATO Conference (MNATO), taking place in Ottawa, Canada from February 23-26, 2017.

MNATO is a four-day conference that brings together university students to debate, better understand, and appreciate the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and issues relevant to its operations and history. Delegates work in teams and assume the role of NATO Member State or Partnership Country representatives on one of our five interactive committees, gaining a rich and unique understanding of Alliance politics, priorities and challenges. Committee topics and crisis scenarios are designed to challenge delegates to think critically and creatively about the issues at hand. Committees are developed and run by experienced staff. This year’s committees are:

1.      The North Atlantic Council

2.      The Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council

3.      The Committee on Proliferation

4.      The Military Committee

5.      Kosovo: A Crisis Unfolding (Historical Crisis Committee)

Students take advantage of our location in Canada’s capital – Canada’s hub for international and political affairs – to meet with policymakers, military policy officials, diplomats and representatives of NATO member countries. MNATO organizes visits to embassies, high commissions, and Canadian federal departments for students to receive briefings on their country’s specific position on Alliance policies and priorities. MNATO convenes at some of Canada’s top venues, including Ottawa’s Parliamentary Precinct, the War Museum, and the Fairmont Château Laurier.

This year’s conference will offer enhanced training materials for all delegates, which will be distributed upon registration, and an optional training session during the conference for all delegates who are unfamiliar with the Rules of Procedure.

Carleton MNATO is a fantastic opportunity to work in realistic, interactive committee settings to solve pressing world issues. For students interested in NATO, international security, international affairs, and diplomacy, MNATO 2017 is a forum to practically apply academic knowledge with like-minded students from across North America.
