Carleton University’s Fateema Sayani has been awarded the Joan Gullen Award for Media Excellence for her article Remembering Paul Menton, which appeared in the Spring 2015 issue of the Carleton University Magazine. The piece was named best article in the Small Print category, awarded each year by the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Paul Norman Menton inspired a centre of support and growth for students with disabilities. Sayani’s piece, published during the 25th anniversary year of the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities at Carleton, did much to tell his fascinating story.

“Paul Menton contributed much to the development of campus, but his story was not well known,” said Sayani. “Going through archives and oral histories gave a sense of who he was and the values he impressed upon the university, which continue today.”

“I am delighted to hear that Paul’s story is going to be continued to be shared with so many people,” said Margaret Manery, Menton’s sister. “I am touched by the news of the award for the article about Paul. He would be so proud. He made many friends who are social workers who stood by him and helped him achieve his goals.”

Sayani will accept the award at an event on March 23, 2016.
