It’s been 75 years since a group of visionary citizens opened the doors of Carleton College in Ottawa to students building their careers after the Depression and military service in the Second World War.
Carleton University is now a leading post-secondary institution, one that has provided a unique educational experience to 130,000 graduates over seven decades.
It was created by the community, not a government or a church. And it is that community spirit – and the people who keep it alive – that we most want to celebrate in 2017.
Over the last 75 years, many great people have become an integral part of the Carleton story. We have been sharing some of their stories at CU75.ca and we’ll continue adding to them.
An integral part of the Carleton story
They have helped us forge partnerships, conduct research that has significant real-world impact and improve the experience of our students inside the classroom and out. We wouldn’t be where we are today without them.
Our location – a beautiful 62-hectare campus bounded by the Rideau River and the historic Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is unceded Algonquin territory and has great significance for our First Nations partners, for whom rivers are the heart of territories rather than borders.
Starting in January, a traditional birch bark canoe will be constructed on campus by Daniel Pinok Smith, an Algonquin master canoe maker, with participation from Carleton students. Construction will take place in the Carleton University Art Gallery, and the completed canoe will be installed in the MacOdrum Library in the spring.

We have a terrific lineup of celebrations this year that are open to the public and we’re hoping you come to help us mark this milestone anniversary year.
The kickoff takes place on campus on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at a lunch-time gathering in the University Centre Galleria that will include VIPs, special displays, games, prizes, contests, giveaways and VIP guests.
