Part I: Research Data Management
The Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) is in the process of drafting a statement of principles on Digital Data Management. To comply with the conditions of the statement, it is important for researchers at all levels to understand Research Data Management (RDM). This presentation will give you an overview of RDM and how you will benefit from it. The key components of RDM will be defined, before relating your research to a process known as an RDM Plan.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Jane Fry is the Data Services Librarian at MacOdrum Library. Working with faculty and researchers to help them in all aspects of Research Data Management is her prime focus. Fry is active in the data community: some past activities include being a co-developer for a number of initiatives including ODESI (the Ontario data portal), the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) Training Repository, as well as the DLI Survival Guide. Fry is also an instructor in the ICPSR Summer Program.
Part II: Introducing Dataverse – A Data Sharing Platform
A proliferation of document repositories has sought to recognize and give exposure to researcher works, and the move to give the dataset ‘centre stage’ in some of these repositories has been a welcome development. For some subject domains and disciplines, best practices and standards have been expertly applied and for some time; but for many researchers, there remains a confusing array of solutions, and it can be challenging to assess what makes a good data repository and where to get started. This is especially the case for the non-specialist new to data sharing, making Dataverse well suited for generalist requirements, particularly for those in the social sciences.
This presentation will provide some context to data publishing and introduce the Scholars Portal Dataverse network, highlighting how Dataverse can help researchers deposit and make their data accessible, address essential metadata requirements for citation credit, share related documentation, and optionally impose selective privacy controls. We’ll cover the current state of the Ontario-based Dataverse service, and profile several interesting use cases for this growing community project. Key features for data curators and researchers will be highlighted and we’ll include a short demo on how to get started. Finally, the Dataverse network will be situated in the context of several related open access publication and repository services offered by the MacOdrum Library.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: George Duimovich heads MacOdrum Library’s systems team, where the group focusses on supporting library technology services and digital initiatives. As a senior systems librarian, his background includes leading library technical services for researcher communities in diverse environments ranging from public health, law/litigation, as well as in the natural resources sector.
