CU Research Development Grants

Purpose

Support early career researchers (within the first 6 years of a tenure-track appointment) to develop their first successful application as a Principal Investigator (PI) to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. (See Terms and Conditions)

Eligibility

Principal Investigator Eligibility: 

• Hold a full-time tenured or tenure-track position at Carleton University at the time of application (i.e. appointment date on or before the applicant submission deadline)
• Be within the first 6 years of academic appointment
• Do not hold Tri-council (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, NFRF) funds as a PI at the time of application. (Excludes fellowships/scholarships).
• Intend to submit a competitive proposal to SSHRC as a PI within the next 12-18 months.
• Have not been awarded a CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR)[1] within the past three (3) years. (Note: Previous recipients of a CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR) proposing a similar research project must clearly explain how they are planning to respond to committee comments and (NEW) the final report for the previous award must have been submitted.)
• Do not hold a CU SSHRC Exchange – Knowledge Mobilization Grant
• A professor may only submit one application as a PI or Co-Principal applicant (co-PI) in a given gate to the CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR).

Co-Principal Investigator Eligibility Must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Hold a full-time tenured or tenure-track position at Carleton University at the time of application (i.e. appointment date on or before the applicant submission deadline)
• Have not been awarded a CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR)[1] within the past three (3) years. (Note: Previous recipients of a CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR) proposing a similar research project must clearly explain how they are planning to respond to committee comments and (NEW) the final report for the previous award must have been submitted.)
• Do not hold a CU SSHRC Exchange – Knowledge Mobilization Grant
• A professor may only submit one application in a given gate to the CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR).                                                                                          

Team Member Eligibility – Anyone is eligible, no CV submission is required.

Budget

Expenses: Expenses must be eligible under the Tri-Agency Guidelines for Use of Grant Funds.

• Eligible expenses include:
  • Stipends to students and postdoctoral fellows
  • Salaries of technical and professional staff
  • Materials, supplies and services
  • Small equipment (i.e. computers) cannot account for more than 1\3^rd of the total budget
  • Research travel (e.g. field work)
  • Knowledge dissemination (travel to present papers at academic conferences and open access costs for no more than a total cost of $3,000)
• Non-eligible expenses include:
  • Professional development activities
  • Partnership-building activities
  • Large equipment and renovations
  • Teaching release

Please note that transfers of funds to other institutions are not permitted.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

1. Challenge—The aim and importance of the endeavor (50%)
   • Originality, significance and expected contribution to knowledge;
   • Appropriateness of the literature review;
   • Appropriateness of the theoretical approach or framework;
   • Appropriateness of the methods/approach;
   • Consideration of sex, gender and other identity factors in the research design
   • Quality of training and mentoring to be provided to students, emerging scholars and other highly qualified personnel, and opportunities for them to contribute; and
   • Potential for the project results to have influence and impact within and/or beyond the social sciences and humanities research community.
2. Feasibility—The plan to achieve excellence (30%) 
   • Appropriateness of the proposed timeline and probability that the objectives will be met;
   • Expertise of the applicant/team in relation to the proposed research;
   • Appropriateness of the requested budget, justification of proposed costs, and, where applicable, other financial and/or in-kind contributions
3. Capability—The expertise to succeed (20%)
   • Quality, quantity and significance of past experience and published and/or creative outputs of the applicant and any co-applicants, relative to their roles in the project and their career stage;
   • Evidence of other past knowledge mobilization activities (e.g. films, performances, commissioned reports, knowledge syntheses, experience in collaboration/other interactions with stakeholders, contributions to public debate and media), and of impacts on professional practice, social services and policies, etc.; and
   • Quality and quantity of past contributions to the development of training and mentoring of students, postdoctoral researchers and other highly qualified personnel

Purpose

Support researchers in the social sciences and humanities who:

• Have held at least one grant as a Principal Investigator (PI) from one of the three federal funding councils or (NEW) from a national sponsor outside of Canada;
• Are not currently holding Tri-Council funding as a Principal Investigator. If in an automatic extension year, can no longer be receiving instalments; and
• Have been unsuccessful in a SSHRC funding competition in the last year. (Excludes SSHRC Connection and Partnership Engage Grants)

It is expected that the Explore grant will lead to a competitive application to SSHRC as a PI within a year of the end date of the grant. (See Terms and Conditions)

Eligibility

• Hold a full-time tenured or tenure-track position (Assistant, Associate, Full) at Carleton University at the time of application (i.e. appointment date on or before the applicant submission deadline)
• A researcher:
  • Has held at least one grant as a Principal Investigator (PI) from one of the three federal funding councils or (NEW) from a national sponsor outside of Canada;
  • Is not currently holding Tri-Council funding as a Principal Investigator. If in an automatic extension year, can no longer be receiving instalments; and
  • Has been unsuccessful in a SSHRC funding competition within the last year. (Excludes SSHRC Connection and Partnership Engage Grants) If not yet in receipt of committee comments from the most recent round of IDG, this does not make you ineligible for this opportunity.
  • May only submit one application in a given gate as PI or Co-Principal Applicant (Co-PI) to the CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR)[1]; and
  • Cannot have been awarded a CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR) in the past three (3) years.
• A CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR) may NOT be held in conjunction with a CU SSHRC Exchange – Knowledge Mobilization Grant.
• Previous recipients of a CU Research Development Grant (SSHRC Explore, NSERC or CIHR) must demonstrate that the proposed single defined research project involves different objectives than their past grant(s) and that there is no duplication of funding for any of the proposed activities;
• And (NEW) the final report for the previous award must have been submitted.

Co-Principal Investigator Eligibility

Must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Hold a full-time tenured or tenure-track position at Carleton University at the time of application (i.e. appointment date on or before the applicant submission deadline)

  • Consideration of Sex, Gender and other identity factors in the research design, if applicable
  • Consideration of interdisciplinary methods or practices in research, if applicable
  • Appropriateness of, and justification for, the budget
• Contributions to the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP) (30%)
  • Past contributions to training of HQP (training environment, HQP awards and research contributions, outcomes and skills by HQP)
  • Training Plan (training philosophy, research training plan)

Purpose

Provide financial support for engineering and natural sciences researchers who:

• Have held at least one grant as a principal applicant from one of the three federal funding councils or (NEW) from a national sponsor outside of Canada;
• Are not currently holding Tri-Council funding as a Principal Investigator. If in an automatic extension year, can no longer be receiving instalments; and
• Have been unsuccessful as a PI in an NSERC Discovery or Alliance funding competition within the last year. (Excludes NSERC Discovery Horizon LoI)

It is expected that the NSERC Bridge Research Grant will lead to a competitive application to NSERC as a PI within a year of the end date of the grant. (See Terms and Conditions)

• Hold a full-time tenured or tenure-track position at Carleton University at the time of application (i.e. appointment date on or before the applicant submission deadline)
• Does not hold or have held CIHR funding as a NPA or PA;
• May hold either NSERC or SSHRC funding;
• Intend to submit a competitive CIHR Project Grant proposal as the NPA within the next 12-18 months.
• Have not been awarded a CU Research Development Grant (NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC Explore)[1] as a PI or co-PI within the last three (3) years
  • Previous recipients of a CU Research Development Grant (NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC Explore) proposing a similar research project must clearly explain how they are planning to respond to committee comments
  • and (NEW) the final report for the previous award must have been submitted.

    • Overall goals and objectives are well defined and clear
    • Anticipated project contributions are likely to advance basic health-related knowledge, health care, health systems or health outcomes
• Criterion 2: Feasibility (30%)
  • Approaches and Methods (80%)
    • Appropriateness of the approaches and methods
    • Timelines and related deliverables are realistic
    • Potential challenges are identified and the mitigation strategies are appropriate
  • Expertise, Experience and Resources (20%)
    • Appropriate expertise and experience to lead and deliver the project outputs and to achieve the proposed contributions
    • Appropriate level of engagement and/or commitment from the applicants
    • Appropriateness of the environment to enable the conduct and success of the project
    • Adequate demonstration of the applicant’s productivity and progress of their research program
• Consideration of Sex, Gender and other identify factors in the research design (10%)
• Appropriateness of budget to support the project (realistic and well-justified) (10%)

Purpose

Provide financial support to health researchers who:

• Have held a CIHR Project Grant as a Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) or Principal Applicant (PA) or (NEW) a health-oriented award from a national sponsor outside of Canada;
• Currently hold no CIHR Project Grant funding as NPA or PA. If in an automatic extension year, can no longer be receiving instalments; and
• Have been unsuccessful as NPA in one of the two last CIHR Project Grant funding competitions.

It is expected that the CIHR Bridge Research Grant will lead to a competitive CIHR Project Grant application as NPA within a year of the end date of the grant. (See Terms and Conditions)

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Criterion 1: Concept (50%)
  • Significance and Impact of the Research
    • Creativity of the idea
    • Rationale of the project idea is sound
    • Overall goals and objectives are well defined and clear
    • Anticipated project contributions are likely to advance basic health-related knowledge, health care, health systems or health outcomes
• Criterion 2: Feasibility (30%)
  • Approaches and Methods (80%)
    • Appropriateness of the approaches and methods
    • Timelines and related deliverables are realistic
    • Potential challenges are identified and the mitigation strategies are appropriate
  • Expertise, Experience and Resources (20%)
    • Appropriate expertise and experience to lead and deliver the project outputs and to achieve the proposed contributions
    • Appropriate level of engagement and\or commitment from the applicants
    • Appropriateness of the environment to enable the conduct and success of the project
    • Adequate demonstration of the applicant’s productivity and progress of their research program
• Consideration of Sex, Gender and other identify factors in the research design (10%)
• Appropriateness of budget to support the project (realistic and well-justified) (10%)
