At the Annual Co-op Awards on Mar 27, hosted by Co-op and Career Services, Krista MacWilliam became the first ever recipient of the Faculty of Engineering and Design Women in Engineering Co-op Student Award.
This award will be given to a student in the co-op program in recognition of her exceptional co-op achievement and significant advancement of women in engineering.
“I am especially honoured to be able to announce Krista for this award,” said Deniz Karman – Acting Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. “Krista is an A+ student and has shown remarkable determination with her co-op work term with AANDC.”
The fourth-year student studying Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering was nominated for her work term with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada – specifically on the Canadian High Arctic Research Station project within the Infrastructure Team.
In the nomination submission from Santino Cicciarella, the supervisor during the work term, and AANDC, it stated that she was challenged – and was instrumental – in synthesizing and tracking various Daily Construction Progress Reports and Cost Consultant Reports as well as an Inuit Benefit Plan related to the CHARS project.
“Krista was an exceptional Co-op student for AANDC and the CHARS project,” said Cicciarella, continuing “She was a very bright and enthusiastic student who provided valuable support towards the CHARS project.”
She was also tasked to participate and coordinate the Carleton Co-op student staffing for the 2015 winter term which she performed with a high degree of professionalism.
“Her outstanding work, and the high praise she received, is indicative of the culture of excellence that we are creating here at Carleton University,” said Rafik Goubran, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
The Faculty has always been at the forefront of the WISE initiative to encourage and support women and girls to pursue an education in Science and Engineering. This award represents a logical step forward in the commitment to going further with that fundamental philosophy by recognizing outstanding women in the Co-op program.
