Research Seminar: “Cooperation and Conflict Between Europe and Russia: A Relational Approach,” with Magdalena Dembinksa

February 6, 2017 at 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Location:Room 3112, 3rd floor Richcraft Hall

The Jean Monnet Chair in “EU Relations with Russia and the Eastern Neighbourhood” is pleased to host a research seminar, “Cooperation and Conflict Between Europe and Russia: A Relational Approach,” with Professor Magdalena Dembinksa, Associate Professor, Université de Montréal.

Research Abstract: Centered on geo-strategies, International Relations theories tend to exclude the possibility of cooperation and conflict taking place simultaneously, particularly when it comes to Russo-European relations. To explain the variation of cooperation/conflict in time and space, the speaker will discuss: (1) the merits of a sociopolitical and relational approach and the importance of shifting the focus of inquiry from state-centred entities to practitioners; and, (2) a comparative research design, using three cases specific to the Russo-European border areas in Estonia, Moldova, and Kaliningrad since 1991.

Please note the research seminar will be hosted in conjunction with the graduate class, ‘The EU and its Eastern Neighbors,’ (EURR5205/INAF5807/PSCI5111) with Professor Joan DeBardeleben.

Doctoral students and their faculty supervisors are encouraged to attend, as well as graduate students enrolled in master’s level programs. The research seminar format includes a speaker who will present research in progress (about 45 minutes) and a discussion with question/answer period (about 45 minutes). Students are expected to participate actively in the discussion in order to gain an advanced understanding with the topic.

Members of the public are invited to attend the research seminar with available classroom seating.

This event is sponsored by the Centre for European Studies (CES) Jean Monnet Chair in “EU Relations with Russia and the Eastern Neighbourhood.”

Jean Monnet Chair events are co-funded by a grant from the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union .
