From September 27 to 29, 2013, over 300 Canadians from all provinces and territories convened at Carleton University for a series of insightful plenary sessions, cultural presentations and panel discussions and workshops that opened up new perspectives. Keynote speakers, including Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand, College of Family Physicians of Canada President Marie-Dominique Beaulieu, and Truth and Reconciliation Commission Commissioner Mary Wilson, spoke passionately (and with evidence at hand) about the real and necessary power of the arts in their respective fields.

Participants explored research and cutting-edge projects that demonstrate the power of the arts in bettering the lives of underserved Canadians, particularly youth, and revitalizing troubled communities through the power of the arts. Spread out over 10 workshops, attendees formulated a number of strategies to enable grassroots youth organizations, arts communities and academia to work with sectors as varied as health, business, justice, urban planning, and education on series challenges such as crime prevention, mental health, unemployment and social exclusion. Background: The National Power of the Arts Forum is the brainchild of Michaëlle Jean Foundation Co-Founder and Co-Chair, Jean-Daniel Lafond. Following his appointment as Senior Scholar at Carleton University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in 2010, M. Lafond worked with Faculty Dean Dr. John Osborne to convene a national conference on the power of the arts. It emerged as a natural outcome of M. Lafond’s previous work promoting the arts in Canada, through the Art Matters Forum series organized out of Rideau Hall.
