Film Studies faculty member Aubrey Anable contributed a chapter to the recently published book Time: A Vocabulary of the Present (NYU Press, 2016). Her essay considers the role that smart phones play in the blurring distinction between work time and play time. Anable looks at popular gaming apps for mobile phones, like Candy Crush Saga and Plants vs. Zombies, alongside popular “productivity” apps to consider their aesthetic and technological similarities.

As the publisher’s description states, Anable’s essay is part of a collection that “theorizes our experiences of time in relation to developments in post-1945 cultural theory and arts practices. Wide ranging and theoretically provocative, the volume introduces readers to cutting-edge temporal conceptualizations and investigates what exactly constitutes the scope of time studies.”
