What is the Professional Institute?

Professional InstituteThe Professional Institute is an initiative within the Faculty of Public Affairs that aims to offer high-level programs and workshops that serve as professional development for a wide variety of careers.

What programs are offered?

There are six courses being offered in the spring/summer of 2016. Please go to the program pages to learn more about each individual program.  If you wish to be contacted when new courses are made available please join our mailing list by contacting fpa-professionalinstitute@carleton.ca.

Who are these programs for?

These programs are set up as continuing education or professional development programs, and are aimed at people who are already working in the sector. Different workshops may be open to different levels of experience, but most have openings for students who are very driven in their career path. For information about specific programs, please see the program page.

Will participants receive a certificate or credit?

These courses are noncredit (i.e. no papers, exams, assignments are required nor will a grade be assigned). Participants will receive a proof of completion (professional certificate) at the end of the course.

How do I get to Carleton University? Where do I park on campus?

Professional Institute courses will be held in several buildings on campus. Please confirm on the program page for your selected course.

If you are commuting by car, parking lots P2 and P9 are conveniently located. Parking passes can be added to your registration for $10 per day (weekday courses only).

Levels 2 & 3 in the Robertson garage (P9) are designated for visitor parking, and it costs $13 to park (4 Hour Maximum) or $3.00 on weekends.

Public transportation

If you are planning to get to campus via OC Transpo, bus numbers 4, 7 and 111 service Carleton’s campus. The O-Train also stops on campus, making it very accessible via public transportation. Use OC Transpo’s quick planner to find the route that would be quickest and easiest for you.

I am coming in from out of town. Are there accommodations available at Carleton?

Yes! From May to August each year, Carleton University converts its academic residences into Ottawa’s largest hotel.

Is the FPA Professional Institute able to accommodate and support my disabilities?

The FPA Professional Institute is committed to facilitating the integration of participants with disabilities. We request that you let us know if you have specific requirements as soon as you register to allow us to accommodate.

What if I can’t come to the workshop and want a refund?

No problem, refunds can be made up to ten business days before the program. If you’d like to withdraw from a program, please email fpa-professionalinstitute@carleton.ca with your registration information and we will do a refund via the same method of payment you used. Within ten business days of the program we will no longer be able to offer a refund. We will, however, allow you to transfer your registration to someone else if you email to notify us that this is your intent. Please include in this email your registration information and the information of the person who will take your place. We cannot transfer the registration fee, so any financial arrangement must be dealt with between you and the person to whom you transfer your registration.

Photo & Video Policy

We reserve the right to use photos and videos taken during course activities for promotional purposes including online and in print.
