Kathy Dobson, a PhD candidate in the School of Journalism and Communication, has won a Vanier Scholarship in recognition of her academic excellence, research potential, and leadership. The award offers a $50,000 bursary per year for up to three years.
“My book, With a Closed Fist, shares an insider’s view of the culture of poverty and examines the impact and ripple effect it can have on all aspects of one’s life,” said Dobson. “I believe the Vanier award means an opportunity for me to continue my mother’s social justice work.”
Dobson was one of two Carleton University doctoral students who received the award. The other was Colin Miyata, a PhD candidate in the School of Engineering.
