Professor Tracey Lauriault was recently named the Canadian Open Data Leader of the Year for her tireless advocacy on behalf of open data. The jury noted that she “may not have the high profile of some within the open data movement in Canada, but her fingerprints are everywhere.”

Professor Lauriault told CBC News that more than 55 Canadian cities employ open data strategies which allow them to exchange information.

“If we want to do things well, we need to do evidence-based planning, evidence-based programming and evidence-based decision-making” said the Assistant Professor of Critical Media and Big Data in the School of Journalism and Communication. “Open data is an enabler for better programming.”
