Being a university student can be stressful, especially if you’re struggling with coursework, finances, friendships, a learning disability, or other challenges. But there are many people on the Carleton campus who are dedicated to helping you succeed both personally and academically.
The Centre for Student Academic Support
The Centre for Student Academic Support (CSAS) offers centralized, peer-to-peer support to provide students with university-level learning strategies. Using a combination of workshops, one-on-one peer mentoring, tutor referrals, in-class presentations, and online initiatives, Learning Support Services teaches students the study skills, habits, and techniques necessary to adapt, thrive and succeed at university.
Study Skills Workshops
Learning Support Services offers workshops on a variety of topics that promote skill development for students at all academic levels. Each workshop is designed to offer students useful tips and strategies to improve their study habits and develop skills that are also useful beyond academics.
First Year Connections Mentoring Program
The Student Experience Office’s First Year Connections program is specifically designed to assist first year students in making a successful transition from high school to university. First Year Connections encompasses all three components of the Student Experience Office’s mandate – transition support, engaging programming opportunities and peer to peer learning. Mentors will support students in their academic, personal and professional goals by providing encouragement, helping students access support services and helping students to get more involved in the Carleton community.
Participating students are paired with an upper-year mentor in their program who they will meet with one-on-one throughout the first six to eight weeks of the school year. Students and Peer Mentors will meet weekly to make sure the transition to university life is as smooth as possible, connecting them with their academic department, identifying social opportunities and ways to meet new people, and ensuring they have someone who they can ask anything at all about Carleton, student resources, and how to get involved and make the most of campus life.
Paul Menton Centre
The Paul Menton Centre is responsible for the coordination of academic accommodations and support services for students with disabilities.
Health and Counselling Services
Carleton’s on-site Health and Counselling Services centre is guided by a philosophy that acknowledges the connection between intellectual development, personal growth, and physical and emotional health. The centre offers medical and mental health services, as well health promotion activities.
