Imagining a Future Canada: An Interdisciplinary Conference | March 2-4^th, 2017

In an increasingly interconnected world, there is a growing recognition of our interdependence. The Visions for Canada, 2042 conference explored ways innovative collaboration among researchers and the community may be the most effective response to Canada’s future challenges.

Civil servants, non-governmental organizers, university faculty, graduate students and alumni from across the ‘civic’ disciplines participated in a three night, two day conference to discuss research and ideas that help imagine Canada’s future in 2042.

Following the model of the Faculty of Public Affairs’s most innovative and renowned academic units – such as the Institute of Political Economy, the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, and the Kroeger College of Public Affairs — this conference was founded on a commitment to the value of interdisciplinary research on Canada’s future. This conference provided an opportunity to take advantage of the expertise of the Faculty of Public Affairs in Canada’s Capital to connect with those in Ottawa engaged in policy-making and governance.

Contributors to the E-Proceedings

Aske, Sherry	Sherry Aske is a News Editor, Presenter and Producer with CBC Ottawa. She is a graduate of the Carleton School of Journalism and Communication with a Masters degree in Communication Studies. Her research looked at the impact the digital transition is having on journalists, news consumers and the industry at large.
Bivens, Rena	Rena Bivens completed her PhD with the Glasgow Media Group at the University of Glasgow, and is now Assistant Professor of Communication at Carleton University. She held a SSHRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies at Carleton University and was a Banting Fellow in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton. Her research explores and interrogates normative design practices which are embedded in media technologies using a critical race and gender lens.
Bueckert, Michael	Michael Bueckert is a PhD candidate in Sociology and Political Economy at Carleton University. He has extensive experience in the student movement at Carleton, having served as the President of the Graduate Students’ Association, the Graduate Caucus Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students–Ontario, and is currently a student representative on the university’s Board of Governors. He is also involved in the Palestinian solidarity movement.
Cockram, Louise	Louise Cockram is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Political Science at Carleton University. She is currently the research lead on a project with the Springtide Collective. This project aims to promote democratic renewal in Nova Scotia by interviewing former MLAs to gain insight into the challenges and successes of being an MLA in the Nova Scotia Legislature.
Farrall, Joanne	Joanne Farrall is currently a PhD student in Communications at the School of Journalism and Communications at Carleton University. She holds a Master of Arts from Queen’s University in Gender Studies. Her current research explores how personal narrative, visual autobiography, trauma, and identity building intersects with systemic cultures of violence in an online context. She recently won the prestigious Vanier Scholarship.
FitzGerald Murphy, Maggie	Maggie FitzGerald Murphy is a PhD student in the Department of Political Science and the Institute of Political Economy, Carleton University. Her research is centered on the ethics of care, governing norms, critical political theory, and feminism.
Ghandeharian, Sacha	Sacha Ghandeharian is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at Carleton University. His research fields are international relations and political theory, and he is particularly interested in feminist post-structuralism and the ethics of care.
Gunn, Christopher M.	Christopher M. Gunn is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Carleton University. His research fields are macroeconomics, credit and banking, and technological change, with a particular focus on analyses of expectations-driven business cycles, real-financial linkages, and the effects and consequences of technological adoption on the economy.
Heidrich, Pablo	Pablo Heidrich is an Assistant Professor for the Bachelor of Global and International Studies program at Carleton University. He specializes in the fields of international political economy, international trade policymaking (particularly in the contexts of financial crises), natural resources and development in Latin America, and comparative regionalism between East Asia and Latin America. He was previously a senior researcher at the North-South Institute, focusing on international trade and development.
Hoque, Anna Shah	Anna Shah Hoque is a Master of Arts student in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University. She is interested in exploring a range of topics in her research, including communications, identity, and hierarchies and normative discourses.
Irving, Dan	Dan Irving, Associate Professor in the Human Rights and Sexuality Studies programs in the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies, Carleton University, is known for his scholarship on masculinities and trans* individuals. His current project explores Eminem and affective dimensions of youth masculinities in times of socio-economic crisis, and he has recently concluded a study of trans* and two-spirit individuals’ experiences of un- and under- employment.
Kaliberda, Elena	Elena Kaliberda is a PhD candidate in the School of Journalism and Communications at Carleton University. She is also the producer and host of the Russian Program Channel CHIN Radio Ottawa, and an independent media expert and consultant.
