We offer substantial financial assistance in the form of teaching assistantships and scholarships based on academic excellence. Students may also have the opportunity to teach a first-year language course for those wishing to gain teaching experience. These positions are awarded on a competitive basis. Applications received before February 1st will automatically be considered for financial assistance; no separate application is required. Merit Scholarships
These scholarships are based on your academic grades of your previous degree and are available for top-quality students. Recommendations for these scholarships are made by your department during the application process per year.
Academic Excellence Scholarships for International Students
Academic Excellence Scholarships for International Students (ITS) are awarded at the discretion of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (based on recommendation by the Department of French) to outstanding new international students with at least an 11.0 grade point average. Awards are for two years, split equally over the Fall, Winter and Summer terms, and are valued at $6000 annually.
Teaching Assistantships
A teaching assistant (TA) assists faculty members with various duties which might include conducting labs or study groups, assisting with lecture preparation, marking assignments and tests, etc. Upon admission, and subject to availability, you will automatically be considered for a TA position if you have a minimum GPA of 10.0 or higher and English-language proficiency. The TA rate for 2021-2022 is valued at $11,061 annually and is paid over three terms of full-time, continuous study or two years.
TA’s work a maximum of 10 hours per week and are governed by a collective agreement with CUPE 4600, Unit 1.

Research Assistantships
A research assistantship (RA) is funded by contract research, or other grant funds, that may require some work related to your research. Upon admission, and subject to availability, you will automatically be considered for a RA position. The value of the RA and its disbursement method is determined by the Department of French.
