“I learned very early the life lesson that it is people, not buildings, that make up an institution. And if we put our hearts to it we can do something worthwhile.”

– Henry Marshall Tory

Henry Marshall Tory, Carleton University’s founder and first president, believed that individuals can make a difference in higher education. Over the years, his passion has encouraged many to invest in Carleton and its students. Today, the prestigious H.M. Tory Society recognizes the generosity of hundreds of donors whose annual gifts make an exceptional difference.

Annual membership is open to donors who give more than $500 in a calendar year—that’s $42 a month in support of financial aid and academic support programs for students, innovative facilities and programs, and teaching and research initiatives that create a unique educational experience at Carleton.

We also welcome our most loyal donors. If you’ve been giving to Carleton for five or more consecutive years—you’re now a member of the H.M. Tory Society. Thank you for your ongoing commitment.

By making a Tory-level gift this year, you will receive exclusive benefits that give you the chance to meet other donors, learn about the difference your gift makes, and stay connected to Carleton. The generous contributions of H.M. Tory Society members are recognized in our online donor lists.

Special membership for recent graduates
For the first five years after graduation, alumni who donate $250 or more in a calendar year will be welcomed as members in the H.M. Tory Society. At $21 a month, this giving level is a manageable way for young alumni to give back to our alma mater and help the next generation of students.
