Congratulations to Carleton History alumni Mackenzie Dancho and Adam Rymes for winning prizes in the North American Conference on British Studies (NACBS) Undergraduate Essay Contest. Each year the NACBS awards eight prizes to the best essays on British topics submitted by undergraduates studying in American and Canadian universities. Dancho wrote “Patriotism before Feminism: Images of Women in the British Media During the First World War.” Rymes’ winning essay was “Manipulated Voices: The Times Use of Soldier’s Letters.”
The NACBS is a scholarly network that studies every aspect of British society. Aside from offering several academic prizes, it also publishes the Journal of British Studies—a critical resource for scholars of British culture. Given the multidisciplinary scope of the NACBS, the Undergraduate Essay Contest allows submissions from a variety of disciplines including English, Philosophy, Cultural Studies, and History. Dancho and Rymes were two of five Canadian students to win this year’s prize.
