In addition to the normal stresses and adjustments all new university students experience, international students face their own unique set of challenges.  Being so far away from home and family can make the transition to university life significantly more difficult. Being in a new country, culture, climate and academic environment can be both exciting and overwhelming.  Many international students require additional supports specific to their needs and experience.

The International Student Services Office, (ISSO), is here to support your student with this transition and for the duration of their stay at Carleton. Please visit the CU Parents website for more helpful information for parents of international students.

Carleton University Students on Exchange: Emergency Contact Information & Resources

The safety and security of our Carleton University students while on exchange is incredibly important to us. The emergency information below has been provided to our students travelling overseas on exchange, and we encourage them to share this information with their families.

  • International SOS App: We strongly advise students download the International SOS app, and register using their Carleton University email address. International SOS can connect students with medical, safety and security advice while they are overseas, including the ability to connect them with expert recommendations and incident reports occurring in the region/country that they are visiting. Read more about the International SOS program.
  • Register as a Canadian Abroad: An additional resource, we recommend students register with the Government of Canada as a Canadian Abroad. By doing so, this will allow the government to notify them directly of any changes in the security situation in the country in which they are studying (or other emergencies). For more information on the Registration of Canadians Abroad program, register online.
  • Embassy and Consular Services Contact Information: In the event of an emergency, students should contact Consular Services by email or phone at +1 (613) 996-8885.

Concerned parents and family members with any questions are welcome to contact Laura Truesdell, Manager with the International Student Services Office (ISSO) directly by email or by phone at +1 (613) 520-2600 ext 6299.
