The Ontario Research and Education Cloud (OREC) is a service available to educators and researchers that uses Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) technology to deliver research and education software packages.
Through OREC, institutions can unite students and researchers by putting the requisite software applications in the hands of students and researchers – at anytime, from anywhere.
Educators and researchers can reserve computing capacity on the VCL through an easy to use, self service portal.
In order to access OREC services you will need:
- a SSH client or a VNC client installed on your workstation,
- an internet connection and
- an active computing account from one of the following institutions: University of Ottawa, Carleton University, La Cite Collegiale or Algonquin College.
Once these prerequisites are met, visit https://orec.rdc.uottawa.ca, login using the appropriate credentials for your affiliated institution, and create a reservation.
It is important to note that reservations are not permanent. Once the reservation has expired, the virtual computer, and any data stored on the virtual computer, is deleted. As a result, IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU BACKUP ANY DATA TO AN EXTERNAL SOURCE.
OREC is based on a partnership between IBM, University of Ottawa, Carleton University, Algonquin College, and La Cite Collegiale.
