Jacques Ellul, 20 Years On

Communicating Humanly in an Age of Technology and Spin: Jacques Ellul in the 21st Century

July 13 – 15, 2014

The specific theme of “Communicating Humanly in an Age of Technology and Spin,” is intended in part to elicit thinking about how modern communications technology is shaping our ways of thinking and living.  The benefits of social media have been highly visible to users who have developed their own networks of contacts. But we know that social media exchanges and other communications thought to be private are also being monitored, stored, and analyzed to an unprecedented extent by different security establishments, and that use of this surveillance has extended beyond security concerns.

Ellul’s concerns about the maintenance of human freedom in the context of evermore sophisticated techniques of control and technological devices are as pertinent as they ever were.  In particular the role of myths, and the cooperation of propagandees in their own subjugation to the dominant political and economic powers are no less observable today that they were in Ellul’s time.
