To all Members of the Carleton Community,
It is with very mixed feelings that I have to announce that Malcolm Butler, dean of the Faculty of Science, will be leaving Carleton at the end of June. Dr. Butler has accepted the position of Vice-President, Academic and Research, at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, N.S., commencing on July 1, 2017. Dr. Butler will be returning to Saint Mary’s, where he was Dean of Science before coming to Carleton in 2010. Since arriving at Carleton, Dean Butler has overseen the development and expansion of the Faculty of Science, and following a successful first term he was re-appointed for a second term on July 1, 2015.
The Faculty of Science has developed significantly under Dr. Butler’s leadership, with growing enrolments, increased research capacity and external funding, new programs and new facilities. In particular, Dr. Butler took on the task of developing the Bachelor of Health Sciences program, which was a complex, multi-disciplinary effort that resulted in a leading-edge program. With graduate programs currently under final review, and a new building under construction, Health Sciences will be a lasting legacy of Dr. Butler’s tenure as Dean of Science.
Dr. Butler has been particularly successful in establishing partnerships for research and community engagement, with initiatives like the Carleton Front Door making researchers accessible to the local community. During his renewal process, the feedback received from the Carleton community referred to him as an exceptional and exemplary leader, a mentor and a tireless advocate for the Faculty of Science and Carleton University. Dr. Butler will now use these qualities in his new leadership role at Saint Mary’s, and he will be sorely missed by all of us here at Carleton.
Dr. Butler will remain as Dean until June 30, 2017. However, in order to ensure a smooth transition, I am pleased to announce that Dwight Deugo has agreed to take on the role of Interim Dean of Science while we conduct a search for a new Dean. Currently Assistant Dean of Science (Enrolment and Retention), and Associate Director (Recruitment and Outreach) for the School of Computer Science, Dr. Deugo will commence a one-year term as Interim Dean on July 1, 2017. I am very grateful to Dr. Deugo for agreeing to step into this important role.
While we will all be very sorry to see Dr. Butler leave Carleton, I know that you will join me in congratulating him on his new appointment. We will ensure that before Dr. Butler leaves, we will have an opportunity to come together as a community to express our gratitude for his significant contributions to the Faculty of Science and to Carleton.
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
