May 31, 2017
To all Faculty and Staff,
I am writing to inform you that the search to hire a new full-term Dean for the Faculty of Engineering and Design has not resulted in a successful appointment. Therefore, I have declared a failed search and have appointed an Interim Dean for a period of two years. This will give the faculty a period of stability and the time to reconstitute the search at a later date.
So, it is with a great deal of pleasure that I am announcing today that Fred Afagh will continue as Interim Dean for the next two years. Dr. Afagh had graciously accepted to serve as Acting Dean in November 2016 when Rafik Goubran was appointed to the role of Acting Vice-President (Research and International). Since that time, Dr. Afagh has provided steadfast and effective leadership as Dean and he has ensured continuity and stability in the faculty during the search process. Extending Dr. Afagh’s appointment for the next two years is in the best interests of the faculty and Carleton as a whole.
As Dr. Goubran has now been named as the full-term Vice-President(Research and International), Dr. Afagh’s title going forward will be Interim Dean, rather than Acting Dean. Dr. Afagh will commence his two-year term as Interim Dean on July 1, 2017.
Prof. Fred Afagh joined Carleton University in 1987 as a member of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and has been involved in teaching and research at Carleton for nearly 30 years. He has served in numerous capacities during his time here, including roles as Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in the Department of MAE, Director of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies, in the Faculty of Engineering and Design. In November 2016, he was appointed as Acting Dean for the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
His professional and academic career spans close to 40 years of service as a consultant to industry and as a teacher and researcher in academia within Canada, the United States, Europe and the Middle East. His main research interests include the stability of non-conservative systems, structural dynamics and control, and structural mechanics.
I want to express my sincere thanks to the members of the search committee who committed so much time to this search, with multiple meetings, including evenings and weekends. Although their efforts did not end with the announcement of a new full-term Dean, they are to be commended for their valuable contributions to the process. These search processes are a very important part of collegial governance at Carleton University, and I am truly grateful to all those from faculty, staff, administration, and students who give their time and expertise in this manner.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Afagh on his appointment and thanking him for agreeing to take on the position of Interim Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design during this period of leadership transition for Carleton University.
Dr. Peter Ricketts
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
