Your Legal Name

Your legal name is the name under which you were registered in a Canadian province or territory. Generally, this is the name you were given at birth. For non-Canadian students, the legal name is the name found on your immigration documents or passport.

Your legal name is the name that is used on all official documentation and records (Diploma, transcripts, certificates of enrollment, etc.) at Carleton University.

Your legal name forms the basis for all of your academic accomplishments. As such, it is expected that students will provide a complete and accurate legal name upon application for admission and maintain and update this name as circumstances warrant.

Requests to change all or part of a name by way of alteration, deletion, substitution or addition must be made in writing by completing the University’s official change of name request form. Appropriate documentation is required to substantiate the request.

  1. Employees are required to submit their request to Human Resources.
  2. Current and previous students are required to submit their request to the Registrar’s Office.

Your Preferred First Name

Your preferred first name is the first name you commonly go by, and differs from your legal first name.

Carleton University, like many other large institutions, requires that individuals use their legal name on all legal records and official documents. However, the University also recognizes that, as an inclusive community, many of its members use first names other than their legal first names to identify themselves. The University acknowledges that a preferred first name can and should be used wherever possible in the course of University business and education.

At present, the Preferred First Name is fully supported in the following systems:

  • Campus Card / UPass
  • CU email address
  • MyCarletonOne (MC1) account
  • Class Lists and Grading
  • cuLearn
  • myAudit results

Requests to add/update/remove the Preferred First Name are made through Carleton Central (Click on ‘Preferred First Name’ from the ‘Personal Information’ menu to start the process. No supporting documentation is required; however, it is assumed that the request will be made in good faith.

Carleton Central will guide you through the Preferred First Name process. Once you complete the process, your preferred first name will be activated within 2 business days.

Please make sure to save or print the confirmation screen, as you will need this information to finalize the process. If you forget your new MC1 account name, please visit the MyCarletonOne password management website.

Once you change your PFN or legal name, you are entitled to a free replacement of your Campus Card and U-Pass. If you are eligible for a U-Pass and already picked it up, you will need to return the old one in order to receive a replacement.
