The Campus Safety Services is investigating a recent increase in thefts of bicycles and bicycle parts from campus.

Since May 25, 2014, the Campus Safety Services has received four reports of stolen bicycles. In all reports, the suspects cut a cable lock to steal the bicycle.

There have also been three reports of bicycles having bicycle components stolen from the bicycle.

There has been increased number of thefts in the Dunton Tower, Residence Commons and Steacie building bicycle rack areas.

The investigation is on-going and copies of the reports have been forwarded to the Ottawa Police Service.

Cyclists are encouraged to take the following steps to help protect their bicycle:

1)      Use a “U-Shaped” bicycle lock to secure your bicycle
2)      Only lock your bicycle to proper bike racks
3)      Lock your bicycle in high traffic areas
4)      Remove any accessories (seat, saddle bags, lights etc.)
5)      Report any suspicious behaviour or activity

Campus Safety would like to remind all cyclists of the secure bicycle compound which is located on-campus in the athletics precinct. The compound is available to all Carleton students, staff and faculty. Access is controlled by a swipe card which can be obtained from Parking Services.
