Banu Örmeci received her Masters and PhD degrees from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke University (USA). She is a Professor and a Canada Research Chair in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University, and leads an internationally recognized research program on wastewater and biosolids treatment. Her research has resulted in several patents and lead to new technologies in the market. Prof. Örmeci serves as the Chair of the International Water Association Sludge Management Specialist Group. She is also the chair of the Royal Society of Canada Water Focus Group and the Canadian Focal Point for the Inter-American Network of Academies of Science Water Program. In addition, she is the past-president and current board member of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) – Ottawa Chapter, and the Faculty Advisor for the Carleton-WISE Student Chapter and is the recipient of several research, teaching and mentoring awards.  She was elected to the Board of Governors, for a two-year term, ending on June 30, 2017
