Studying journalism at Carleton comes with all sorts of advantages, and being in Ottawa is one of them. Arts groups and NGOs are headquartered here, Parliament Hill and Canada’s Supreme Court give students front row seats on important stories of the day. Oh, and when the Editor-in-Chief of Policy Options, Jennifer Ditchburn (MJ ’14), is looking for a young journalist to interview Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in his capacity as Minister of Youth, she doesn’t have to look any further than the School.

That’s how 4th-year journalism student Anna Desmarais wound up sitting across from the PM for an exclusive 15-minute one-on-one interview not long ago. From civic engagement to job opportunities to the need for innovative thinking when it comes to employment, Desmarais explored key challenges facing young Canadians these days, and asked Trudeau to lay out his vision and policies as Youth Minister.
