Students in Carleton’s Master of Journalism program are in upstate New York to report on election day in the United States as part of their reporting skills ‘bootcamp’ class.

The 19 students and three of their teaching assistants will fan out to polling stations, party offices, schools and other gathering places in Ogdensburg, Canton and Potsdam to report on the historic events.

The multimedia journalism produced by the students will be posted to a web platform – AmericaVotes2016.cusjc.ca – and on numerous social media sites.

Journalism professors Allan Thompson and Janice Tibbetts, who co-teach the reporting skills bootcamp, will also be there to act as ‘publishers’ of the AmericaVotes2016 publication.

“When we were planning out the course back in the summer and realized that one of our all-day bootcamp classes fell on November 8, it seemed crazy to be sitting in a classroom in Ottawa when we could be in the U.S. covering the election,’’ Thompson said.

The project won the immediate support of Alan Steele, Director of the Discovery Centre for Undergraduate Research and Engagement at Carleton. The Discovery Centre is covering hotel costs for the students and will later showcase some of their work.
