Associate Professor Kanina Holmes is gearing up to take a group of students to the Yukon next summer as part of a new special topics course.

Stories North will focus on multimedia storytelling, introducing students to a part of Canada where few people get the chance to venture. Students will get an opportunity to meet with local community members, including Indigenous elders and youth to explore the theme of reconciliation. This initiative, focusing on experiential education, comes in the wake of the final report of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its calls for action to address the multigenerational legacies of residential schools. These calls for action include finding ways to foster cultural sensitivity and empathy.

Professor Holmes launched a crowdfunding campaign via Carleton’s Futurefunder platform on Tues. Nov. 29, so far raising $7,500 to help students offset the costs of travelling and living in the Yukon for four weeks. You can contribute to these fundraising efforts by visiting the Futurefunder site.

Professor Holmes was interviewed by CBC Ottawa’s afternoon show, All In A Day, about Stories North. She also got the chance to speak about her hopes for the project with one of her former students who was hosting the noon show on CBC Whitehorse. You can find the Dec. 2 interview below.

The Ottawa Citizen’s UpBeat section also featured an article on Stories North on Dec. 5
