Dr. Sarah E.K. Smith, who joins the School as an assistant professor of communication and media studies in January 2017, has just published her first book, General Idea: Life & Work, with The Art Canada Institute, a non-profit research organization based at Massey College, University of Toronto. The book explores the origins and work of General Idea, an artist group comprised of AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal. Working and living together for 25 years (1969-1994), General Idea created internationally acclaimed conceptual art projects, making bold statements about image culture, queer identity, commerce, and mass consumption.

“General Idea was provocative, controversial, and visionary,” Dr. Smith argues. “They created a platform for social change through inventive performances, installations, paintings, sculptures, photography, and, of course, their legendary AIDS campaign.”

Dr. Smith’s book is available online.
