Sandra Robinson appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on the Status of Women Canada, session #37, on December 5, 2016. The Standing Committee is undertaking a study on Violence Against Young Women and Girls in Canada and invited Dr. Robinson to speak as an expert witness along with Ms. Corinne Charette (Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Spectrum, Information Technologies and Telecommunications, Department of Industry). Robinson addressed the role of algorithms in the context of networked c
ommunications, such as those for social media, search, and, in particular, what is broadly conceived as automatic content curation by algorithms in relation to the escalation of cyber-bullying online. Her appearance is the second time faculty from the School of Journalism and Communication have been called as expert witnesses following Dr. Rena Bivens’ September 2016 testimony in front of the same committee.

Earlier in the session, the Committee heard testimony from Prof. Jane Bailey (Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa), and Matthew Johnston (Director of Education MediaSmarts).
