Apply to the MJ Program
Please Note: Carleton University will be facilitating a second round of applications for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) for students applying to graduate programs. Eligibility criteria, instructions on how to apply and the application forms are available on the Graduate Studies website.
MJ Application Deadline: February 1 for Fall term admission (September admission only).
If you are recommended for admission you will be automatically considered for scholarships and teaching assistantships: there is no separate application.
If there are remaining positions after this round of admission, then additional applications will be accepted by April 15 – please consult with Graduate Administrator.
What you need in order to apply:
- Two confidential Referee Appraisal Forms.* These are generated electronically to those listed on your OUAC Application form. Ensure the information is correct and the referees have been informed of their role. Referees should be able to comment on your academic background and aptitude for graduate school. Professional journalists applying for advanced standing may list professional references.
- One Statement of Intent outlining your interests and objectives in the MJ program. The statement should be a 2-4 page, double-spaced document that discusses who you are, why you wish to become a journalist, what you hope to achieve in our program, and what you hope to do with a Master of Journalism degree.
- One Resumé/Curriculum Vitae.
- One set of Writing Samples — ideally works of journalism. Your samples should display your skills as a writer, researcher or thinker. The samples should consist of newspaper and magazine clippings, and newsletters (all of these are to be uploaded online – maximum of three). Please indicate whether your sample has been published or broadcast and include details of the airdate where appropriate. If you are uploading essays from your undergraduate degree, select those that, in your view, represent your best work. If original documents are not available to upload in Carleton Central, you may email your URL links (in body of email) along with your name and Carleton ID Number and the words “portfolio links” in the subject line. Send to firstname.lastname@example.org. Online links are preferable, but if they are not available, audio or video DVDs must be mailed directly to: Carleton MJ Program, Rm 4312 Richcraft Hall, Ottawa, Ontario, K1S 5B6, CANADA. Note: If you wish us to return your samples, include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage.
- One copy of Academic Transcripts/Audits from the university or universities you have attended. If you are currently completing your undergraduate degree, upload an interim transcript/audit before the February 1 deadline. Upon recommendation of admission, original official transcripts will be required.
- One copy of your TOEFL/IELTS/CAEL/English proficiency test score* is required if your native language (usually International Applicants) is not English. Upon recommendation of admission, original documents will be required. Please follow these instructions:
- If you are outside Canada please visit the Test of English as a Foreign Language website (toefl.org) or the International English Language Testing System (ielts.org) website to learn about testing locations and procedures.
- If you are in Canada we advise that you visit www.cael.ca to inquire about taking a Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test.
- To be eligible for the Master of Journalism program, you must score at least 600 on the TOEFL test (250 on the computer-based test; 100 on the internet-based test), a 7 in all components of the IELTS test, or 70 on the CAEL test; or, if you have three years of full-time/non-ESL English-language education you must provide official transcripts to show this. Letters from universities stating the medium of instruction is English are not acceptable

After assembling the six required elements, click on the “APPLY ONLINE” (Fall 2013 & Beyond) below and follow the directions to create an online OUAC account and upload your material.
- Your password will be emailed to you within 3 business days.
- Once you receive your ID and password you will have access to this account to complete the application form and make the online payment.
- After payment is received, you will be emailed your Carleton User ID Number and instructions on how to access Carleton Central.
- This number and your name must be included at the top right-hand corner of each of your uploaded pages.
