Admission Requirements
Graduate Diploma in IPA
- An undergraduate four-year degree (or equivalent) with an academic average of B+ or higher.
- The School also considers mid-career applicants who do not satisfy this degree requirement but who have demonstrated relevant professional excellence over five years. Such applicants will be required to take designated university courses to qualify for the Diploma in IPA (Type 3). These courses are determined on an individual basis in consultation with the IPA Supervisor. Please contact the School of Public Policy and Administration for details.
- Students may receive advanced standing without transfer of credit for up to 1.5 credits, for required courses. This will be determined on an individual basis in consultation with the IPA Supervisor and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs and pursuant to Section 6.1 of the General Regulations section of the Graduate Calendar. In general, a grade of B+ or higher is necessary in the equivalent courses in order to receive advanced standing.
- Existing Carleton Graduate Students: A separate application for the IPA Diploma (Type 2) is required for existing Carleton graduate students.
Master of Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) with IPA Concentration
- An undergraduate four-year degree or post-graduate degree (or equivalent) with an academic average of B+ or higher.
- The School also considers mid-career applicants who do not satisfy this degree requirement, but who have demonstrated professional excellence over at least five years. Such applicants will be required to take designated university courses to qualify for the MPPA program. These courses are determined on an individual basis in consultation with the MPPA Supervisor. - Completion of a 1.0-credit university course covering micro- and macroeconomic theory (ECON 1001 and ECON 1002 or the equivalent). A working knowledge of algebra is also expected.
- Some applicants may be admitted to the program despite not having completed the prerequisite in economics, on the condition that the course(s) be completed in the first year of the program. Regardless of this provision, it is strongly recommended that students complete the prerequisites before starting the program, to ensure that their progress through the core courses is unimpeded.
