Withdrawal and Tuition Refund Credits

Course changes and withdrawals can only be done through Carleton Central. To be eligible for a refund credit, withdrawals must be made prior to the deadlines noted below or on the Dates and Deadlines page.

A refund is only available if a fee adjustment results in a credit sufficient to offset all other amounts due on the student account at that time. Refunds are made to the student and are not automatically issued. Students can request a refund by logging in to Carleton Central and selecting ‘Refund Request’. For more information, please see our FAQ.

The University reserves the right to withhold tuition refunds until the end of the academic session in which they were generated.

Refund Schedules

In order to receive a full financial adjustment when dropping a course, a student must ensure that they withdraw themselves from the course via Carleton Central before the financial adjustment deadline that applies to the course. Please also make sure you understand how your fees are calculated – dropping a course may not necessarily generate a refund.

The refund schedule is as follows:

Summer 2022 Financial Withdrawal Deadlines

Early summer courses dropped before midnight on May 20 will receive a fee adjustment
Full summer courses dropped before midnight on May 20 will receive a fee adjustment
Late summer courses dropped before midnight on July 22 will receive a fee adjustment

Fall 2022 Fee Adjustment and Refund Schedule:

Courses dropped before midnight on September 30 will receive a fee adjustment

Winter 2023 Fee Adjustment and Refund Schedule:

Courses dropped before midnight on January 31 will receive a fee adjustment

Notes About Refunds

If courses are dropped prior to the financial withdrawal deadline, students may still be required to pay for some non-refundable fees such as the health insurance and the UPass.

Undergraduate Students

Summer Term

Undergraduate students in the summer term are charged fees according to the number of billing hours they take. Each course you drop before the financial withdrawal deadline will result in a fee adjustment.

Fall/Winter Term

Undergraduate students in the fall and winter terms are assessed fees based on the number of billing hours taken per term. At 2.0 billing hours per term, students are charged a flat rate for their program. Subsequent courses above 2.0 billing hours will not result in additional tuition fees. Students who withdraw from 2.5 billing hours to 2.0 billing hours, even before the financial withdrawal deadline, will not receive a fee adjustment. There will only be a fee adjustment when students withdraw below 2.0 billing hours.

Graduate Students

Graduate students are charged fees according to their program status; either full-time or part-time. Students admitted to their program as full-time will be charged the flat rate for the duration of their program no matter how many billing hours they are registered in. Graduate students admitted to their program as part-time will be charged per credit for the duration of their program. Changes to program status or withdrawal must be requested through their department and prior to the financial withdrawal deadline.

International Currency/Wire Refunds

Refunds for international payments must be refunded back to the original sender’s account. No exceptions to this policy will be made. Refunds that are issued in international currency will utilize the exchange rate valid at the time the refund is processed.
