This presentation will provide an overview of disability advocacy in the non-profit sector including a look at local, provincial and national models of disability advocacy, with particular focus on Citizen Advocacy. Brian Tardif will touch on varying types of advocacy with examples of each. A brief history of Citizen Advocacy Ottawa, examples of advocacy achievements at the individual and systemic levels and reflections of his 30 years of experience on the challenges and changes faced by non-profit organizations that have an advocacy function as part of their mandate.<\/p>\n
Brian Tardif has been the Executive Director of Citizen Advocacy Ottawa since 1985. He holds positions with a number of other United Way agencies including Executive Director of the Ottawa Distress Centre and Social Work positions with both the Distress Centre of Ottawa and Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Greater Halifax.<\/p>\n
Dr. Tardif works as a consultant providing organizational development assistance to organizations in the non-profit sector across Ontario as a trained On-Site Facilitator through the United Way\/Centraide Canada and through private contracts. He is a graduate of St. Mary\u2019s University (B.A. \u201874), Dalhousie University (BSW \u201881) and Carleton University (MSW \u201891). Brian\u2019s graduate studies focused on Social Work Administration and key research has been on Strategic Planning in the Voluntary Sector.<\/p>\n
