Professor Frances Abele spoke with the CBC about the government’s\u00a0approach to Canada’s North, and particularly the Prime Minister’s interest in\u00a0developing the north through natural resource extraction. Although mining companies are eager to access the wealth of resources to be found in the North, they aren’t as excited\u00a0about the price tag that comes with developing necessary infrastructure. And according to Professor Abele,\u00a0northern municipalities just don\u2019t have the tax base to sustain their operations, let alone fix the deteriorating\u00a0infrastructure\u00a0in place now. She notes that instead, the government needs a different approach: “With northern governments and especially with aboriginal government and aboriginal communities, we need to\u00a0put more attention into figuring out what is a smart way to address the looming crises that are coming with demographic growth and climate change.
