Street Art
:Looks at visual art and performance outside the gallery and museum. The first half of the course focuses on street art from early Pop Art to the rise of graffiti art, while underlining its links to music and dance.  The second half of the course focuses on performance in its broadest sense, from street buskers to contemporary artists such as Santiago Sierra and the Guerrilla Girls. Concepts such as the city, public space, the everyday, authenticity and legitimacy, as well as issues of gender and race will be addressed. Historical moments such as May 1968, the Occupy Movement and The Arab Spring will also be considered as we interrogate the relationship between the street, performance, art and politics from both a local and global perspective.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated familiarity with contemporary visual art.  Strong Base in Contemporary Critical Theory – particularly as it relates to the Everyday, the City, the Street, Gender, and Race ; Strong Knowledge of Contemporary Performance  – Post-War to the Present; Strong Knowledge of International Contemporary Street Art  – Post-War to the Present; Some Familiarity with Music and Dance as it relates to Street Art; Familiarity with May 1968, and French Theories of the Everyday; Familiarity with recent Political Demonstrations in the Street (Arab Spring, Occupy Movement, Montreal Students etc.)

All positions are subject to budgetary approval. This course may be taught by an employee who has the right to automatic reappointment. Applicants should hold at least an M.A. in the appropriate discipline and have had previous teaching experience in the subject area.  Specific qualifications listed.
