Fourth-year Seminar – Fall 2013
Spaces are still available in a new and exciting fourth-year special topics seminar entitled:
Architecture and the Mass Media.
ARTH 4800 Topics in Architectural History – Fall term
- This fall term we are offering a new seminar on Architecture and the Mass Media (ARTH 4800 A).
- The course will explore three intersecting themes: how architecture operates as a mass medium (how it expresses meaning and how we experience the built environment); how the practice and reception of architecture is affected by representation in mass media (in print, photography, film, radio and tv); and the architecture of the mass media (e.g., cinemas, broadcasting centres, newspaper buildings). We will consider how other media inform our understanding of architecture and how architecture frames and affects our experience of different media. The course will focus primarily on writings about modern spaces (19th and 20th century), but will also consider the typographical revolution of the early modern era.
- The class meets on Mondays from 11:35 am -2:25 pm. 4th-year standing is required for entry into ARTH 4800 A; however, 3rd-year students with interest and a strong academic track record will be considered.
- If you are interested in the course, please contact Prof. Windover (michael.windover@carleton.ca).
