• Gift: One-time donation made freely and with no expectation of benefit.
  • Pledge: A gift that will be paid in instalments.
  • POP: Payment of an instalment on a pledge.
  • Endowment Deed: An endowment deed is a binding document which details Carleton University’s commitment to the donor about how their gift will be used. In addition, it outlines the donor’s financial commitment to establish a new award and what will happen if future circumstances require a change in terms.
  • Bursary: A bursary is a monetary award for students in financial need. A bursary may have an academic component.
  • Scholarship: A scholarship is an award for students who demonstrate academic excellence. A scholarship may include other criteria.
  • Banner: Banner is the university’s web-based integrated suite of administrative computing software. It provides a state-of-the-art information technology infrastructure that allows Carleton University to increase efficient and effective ways of educating; to provide a greater range of services; and better manage the University‚Äôs operations.
  • The Banner Advancement System is a versatile system that offers a high degree of flexibility with a full range of functions to maintain a database of prospective donors, as well as campaign, pledge and donation information. The system has been helping Carleton University manage constituents and events; cultivate relationships; and plan and monitor campaigns since May 1, 2001.
  • VPN: The Virtual Private Network (VPN) client software is required in order to access Carleton University resources that are restricted to on-campus use. It allows access to many campus resources: e-mail accounts, news and Web services, as well as proprietary, licensed and copyright materials. The VPN software lets you virtually plug your computer into the university’s network. With the VPN software running, it is as if your home computer is locally attached to the university.
  • Self-Serve: The Banner Advancement Self-Serve for Advancement Officers option provides the ability to review constituent information via the web. Several search options are included to locate the desired records. Advancement Officers can access information from the Banner Advancement database while they are traveling. They can view and update appropriate information on individual records via the Internet.
  • Annual giving: Carleton’s annual outreach to Alumni, Parents, Faculty and Staff, Students and friends. The annual fund supports current university wide priority projects through phone and direct mail appeals.
  • HMTS: The prestigious H.M. Tory Society recognizes the generosity of annual donors whose gifts make an exceptional difference at Carleton. Contributions of $500 or more in a calendar year guarantee membership. Alumni who donate $250 or more (in a calendar year) within five years of graduation are also welcomed as members. Members receive regular update letters from Carleton’s president, informing them of the activities, achievement and challenges facing the university. You’ll also receive invitations to an annual reception hosted by the president – as well as invitations to other prestigious Carleton events.   • Major giving: Constitutes the largest gifts made to particular faculty, department, or unit. They represent significant and thoughtful commitments on the part of prospects and are between $10,000 and $1 million.
  • Sponsorship: A gift for which the donor receives a predetermined benefit (such as advertising)- does not qualify for charitable tax receipt.
