As part of the twenty-fifth commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi in Canada, The Rwanda High Commission in Canada held a series of events since April 7th, 2019. Participants honored the victims of the this modern tragedy all around Canada. Most notably, the younger generations were called to uphold the legacy of strength, resilience, and unity that have fueled Rwanda’s post-genocide transformation.<\/p>\n
To continue the reflection and discussions initiated then, the High Commission is convening an international conference entitled “Justice and Memory.” About 300 scholars, students, policy makers, and journalists will convene in Canada’s capital city to consider the challenges related to memory preservation, modern forms of genocide, negation and denial, and the status of justice provision.<\/p>\n
Speakers will look at the process of collective memory formation as it pertains to historical facts about the genocide against the Tutsi. Beyond conserving evidence, could the importance of preserving memory be found in its role for building a more unified and resilient post-genocide society?<\/p>\n
