chapter examines the opposition by members of the Xolobeni community\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">proposed mining\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">their communally<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">\u2013<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">occupied\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">land<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">including through litigation<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">While only\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">one\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">strategy amongst\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">many<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">use\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">of law is notable and has thus\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">far\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">been effective in challenging the mining\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">company\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">and the government<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">The Xolobeni struggle points\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">important links between efforts\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">to overcome\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">gendered\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">structures\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">of production and reproduction and environmental destruction\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">that\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">offers insights for feminist struggles for climate justice<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">We\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">draw\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">Silvia Federici\u2019<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">gendered framing of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">commons to tease out\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">the key tensions in the long<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">\u2013<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">drawn<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">\u2013<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">out\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">opposition\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">mining in Xolobeni<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">: the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">involvement of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">women as the main\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">producers\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">of food\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">custodians\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">the land<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">their movement to the centre\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">struggle\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">in the context\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">violence\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">against\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">activists<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">and their assertion\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">new\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">forms of temporality\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">that engage the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">responsibilities of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">present generation\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"fontstyle0\">the future<\/span><span
