\"ShireenAbstract:<\/strong>
\nThis chapter examines the opposition by members of the Xolobeni community\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>proposed mining\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>their communally<\/span>\u2013<\/span>occupied\u00a0<\/span>land<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>including through litigation<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>While only\u00a0<\/span>one\u00a0<\/span>strategy amongst\u00a0<\/span>many<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>use\u00a0<\/span>of law is notable and has thus\u00a0<\/span>far\u00a0<\/span>been effective in challenging the mining\u00a0<\/span>company\u00a0<\/span>and the government<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The Xolobeni struggle points\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>important links between efforts\u00a0<\/span>to overcome\u00a0<\/span>gendered\u00a0<\/span>structures\u00a0<\/span>of production and reproduction and environmental destruction\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>offers insights for feminist struggles for climate justice<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>draw\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>Silvia Federici\u2019<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>gendered framing of the\u00a0<\/span>commons to tease out\u00a0<\/span>the key tensions in the long<\/span>\u2013<\/span>drawn<\/span>\u2013<\/span>out\u00a0<\/span>opposition\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>mining in Xolobeni<\/span>: the\u00a0<\/span>involvement of\u00a0<\/span>women as the main\u00a0<\/span>producers\u00a0<\/span>of food\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>custodians\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the land<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>their movement to the centre\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>struggle\u00a0<\/span>in the context\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>violence\u00a0<\/span>against\u00a0<\/span>activists<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and their assertion\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>new\u00a0<\/span>forms of temporality\u00a0<\/span>that engage the\u00a0<\/span>responsibilities of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>present generation\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>the future<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
