{"id":6430,"date":"2014-09-17T18:50:52","date_gmt":"2014-09-17T22:50:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/?post_type=cu-events&#038;p=6430"},"modified":"2015-05-07T11:05:15","modified_gmt":"2015-05-07T15:05:15","slug":"south-africa-1994-critical-reflection-post-apartheid-era","status":"publish","type":"cu-events","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/cu-events\/south-africa-1994-critical-reflection-post-apartheid-era\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa after Apartheid: Critical Reflections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Institute of African Studies is pleased to announce a one day conference focused on South Africa since the end of Apartheid.<\/p>\n<p>With the generous support of Carleton&#8217;s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of History and the Institute of African Studies, we have brought together leading South African and North American scholars, public figures, and commentators who will provide their insight and analysis to facilitate probing discussions of the past, present and futures of South Africa, a leading economic and political state in Africa and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote speaker was to be \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.numsa.org.za\/\">Irvin Jim<\/a>, General Secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), but due to increasing debates within the trade union movement in South Africa concerning its future directions, particularly concerning the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), he has had to regretfully cancel his participation.<\/p>\n<p>Other speakers include: Hein Marais (South African author and political analyst); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bc.edu\/schools\/cas\/sociology\/faculty\/profiles\/zine-magubane.html\">Zine Magubane<\/a> (Boston College); <a href=\"https:\/\/politique.uqam.ca\/corps-professoral\/professeurs\/175-omeara-dan.html\">Dan O&#8217;Meara<\/a> (Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al); <a href=\"http:\/\/people.laps.yorku.ca\/people.nsf\/researcherprofile?readform&amp;shortname=rsaunder\">Richard Saunders<\/a> (York University); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.queensu.ca\/ensc\/faculty\/reg-faculty\/allison-goebel.html\" target=\"_blank\">Allison Goebel<\/a> (Queen&#8217;s University); and <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/polisci\/people\/freeman-linda\/\">Linda Freeman<\/a> (Carleton University).<\/p>\n<p>This is part of a number of events concerning South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, November 5th, at 7pm, <strong>John S.
