Abstract:<\/p>\n

The Vancouver riot and its consequences have been comprehensively\u00a0studied by Canadian\u00a0scholars, who have placed them within the historical context\u00a0of Canada\u2019s increasingly\u00a0restrictive twentieth-century racial immigration\u00a0policies; mobilization of anti-Asian\u00a0sentiment within the labour movements of\u00a0the Pacific north-west; and Canada\u2019s\u00a0international, imperial and diplomatic\u00a0relationships.\u00a0These studies demonstrate that the events of\u00a0September 1907 were the\u00a0culmination of a decade of increasing white hostility and racism directed\u00a0towards Asians immigrating to British Columbia, the strength of which had been underestimated\u00a0by authorities in Ottawa. Thus\u00a0the extent of the violence surprised federal officials\u00a0and spurred on the adoption of a new, restrictive\u00a0immigration regime in\u00a01908. However, while\u00a0historians have long recognized the international and British imperial dimensions of\u00a0British\u00a0Columbia\u2019s anti-Asian movement, the connections between immigration restriction\u00a0policies in South Africa and Canada remain under-researched.
