The students also learn from experts on the topic in the African country (or countries). This is an experiential learning course that utilizes a blend of in class seminar, field visits, guest instructors, and other practical methods of delivering the content. The course focuses on a selected topic in the instructor\u2019s area of research and examines current issues within the Country of study, the Continent and the World at large.<\/p>\n<p>The course is open to African Studies Majors, Minors graduate students and other interested students in 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0year standing.<\/p>\n<p>In 2026, Prof. Nduka Otiono, director of Institute of African Studies will direct the course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Title: <em>Social Movements, Technological Innovation, and Youth Agency in Africa.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Host Institution: <\/strong>School of Communication, Day Star University, Nairobi, Kenya<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Carleton university will cover accommodation, local travel in Kenya, meals during special outings or tours. Our students will be responsible for tuition to Carleton University, international travel, visas, insurance, vaccinations, everyday meals, and all incidental costs,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course focus\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This two-week study abroad course, hosted by <strong>Daystar University<\/strong>, immerses students in Nairobi\u2019s dynamic landscape of youth activism, digital innovation, and social change.<br \/>\nIt examines how young Africans are reshaping their societies through social movements, technological creativity, and entrepreneurial agency, situating Kenya as a key case study of Africa\u2019s \u201cinnovation generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By combining classroom seminars at Daystar University with field visits, community dialogue, and cultural experiences\u2014including a Safari tour\u2014students gain firsthand understanding of how youth-led initiatives drive transformation across social, political, and technological spheres.<\/p>\n<p>Open to Undergraduate and Graduate Students<\/p>\n<p>In order to register, you will first need to submit a statement of interest that includes your name, program, year of study, any related courses on Africa you have taken, and why you would like to enroll in this course to <a href=\"m&#97;&#105;&#x6c;&#x74;&#x6f;&#x3a;a&#102;&#114;&#105;&#x63;&#x61;&#x6e;st&#117;&#100;&#x69;&#x65;&#x73;&#64;c&#117;&#110;&#x65;&#x74;&#x2e;ca&#114;&#108;&#x65;&#x74;&#x6f;n&#46;&#99;&#97;\">&#x61;&#x66;&#x72;&#105;&#99;an&#x73;&#x74;&#x75;&#100;&#105;es&#x40;&#x63;&#x75;&#110;&#101;t&#46;&#x63;&#x61;&#x72;&#108;&#101;to&#x6e;&#x2e;&#x63;&#97;<\/a>\u00a0 by <strong>October 30 <em>2025.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please register for the course by submitting an override request for departmental approval once summer registration opens on<strong> March 19, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Carleton Courses Taught Abroad \u2013 Necessary Documents<\/h2>\n<h3>Travel Registry<\/h3>\n<h4>All students going abroad must complete the Travel Registry on Carleton Central before travelling abroad. The steps are as follows:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Log into Carleton Central<\/li>\n<li>Select\u00a0<strong>Travel Registry<\/strong>\u00a0under the Personal Information tab in the Main Menu<\/li>\n<li>Once in the Travel Registry function, select\u00a0<strong>Add Travel Record<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the\u00a0<strong>Travel Information<\/strong>\u00a0portion, enter in your departure and arrival dates<\/li>\n<li>In the Reason for my travel drop-down menu, select <strong>Other and write down Study Abroad-Nairobi, Kenya<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Enter the remaining information in the\u00a0<strong>Travel Contact Information<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>submit<\/strong>\u00a0once all information is entered<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Required Documentation<\/h3>\n<p>Once students have submitted their information in the Travel Registry, they are then able to upload required supporting documentation.<strong>\u00a0Students will not be permitted to travel without complete and accurate submission of required documentation.<\/strong>\u00a0It is not possible to upload the documentation prior to completing the Travel Registry. You will be redirected to the document upload page once you have submitted your travel record.
