Ottawa provides students with access to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Government departments such as Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development and Export Development Canada<\/li>\n<li>Non-government organizations working in fields such as international development, human rights, and the environment<\/li>\n<li>African diplomatic representatives<\/li>\n<li>Growing number of African-Canadian and diaspora community groups<\/li>\n<li>Africanist faculty at four universities (Carleton University, University of Ottawa, Saint Paul University, Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec en Outaouais)<\/li>\n<li>National Archives of Canada and other rich holdings of archival materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>PhD Program<\/h3>\n<p>The Collaborative PhD with a Specialization in African Studies is designed for graduates of Masters programs in the humanities and the social sciences who, through interdisciplinary dialogue, wish to enrich their training in a particular discipline or area of study by developing expertise in African Studies.<\/p>\n<p>The Collaborative PhD is currently available with <strong>six participating units<\/strong>. More units will be added to the collaborative PhD in African Studies in the coming months. Amongst the units expected to join the Collaborative PhD in African Studies specialization are\u00a0 History, and The Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture (ICSLAC).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradprograms\/africanstudies\/#PhD_Anthropology__with_Collaborative_Specialization_in_African_Studies\">Ph.D. Anthropology with Collaborative Specialization in African Studies<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradprograms\/africanstudies\/#PhD_Anthropology__with_Collaborative_Specialization_in_African_Studies\">Ph.D. <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/architecture-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Architecture with Collaborative Specialization in African Studies<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradprograms\/africanstudies\/#PhD_Anthropology__with_Collaborative_Specialization_in_African_Studies\">Ph.D. <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/english-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English with Collaborative Specialization in African Studies<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradprograms\/africanstudies\/#PhD_International_Affairs__with_Collaborative_Specialization_in_African_Studies\">Ph.D. International Affairs with Collaborative Specialization in African Studies<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradprograms\/africanstudies\/#PhD_Anthropology__with_Collaborative_Specialization_in_African_Studies\">Ph.D. <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/graduate.carleton.ca\/cu-programs\/political-science-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Political Science with Collaborative Specialization in African Studies<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradprograms\/africanstudies\/#PhD_Sociology__with_Collaborative_Specialization_in_African_Studies\">Ph.D. Sociology with Collaborative Specialization in African Studies<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Master&#8217;s Program<\/h3>\n<p>The Collaborative Master\u2019s program with a Specialization in African Studies is specially designed for current Carleton master\u2019s students in participating programs within the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculties of Arts and Social Science<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Affairs<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sprott School of Business<\/a> who wish to enrich their training by developing expertise in the field of African Studies through interdisciplinary dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>Unique features of our program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it is the only graduate-level program in African Studies in Canada;<\/li>\n<li>offers experiential learning opportunities in Africa or in organizations working on African issues in the Ottawa-Gatineau region;<\/li>\n<li>provides students with interdisciplinary training and skills in African Studies so they can further their careers in the public, private, or non-governmental sectors.
