The combined honors program provided me with new insights on social, political and economic developments in African countries. Since graduating, I participated in an internship in Somalia called the Global Enrichment Foundation. I was responsible for monitoring the Women Scholarship Fund, which provided monetary and social assistance to Somali women pursuing an undergraduate degree. My bachelors degree in African Studies, gave me important historical and political information on Somalia, which made this experience more meaningful. Moreover, I was fortunate to enough to gain employment experience at Human Concern International, which is a local NGO that responds to international and local crises. I was able to transfer the skills I learned at Carleton such as problem solving and creative thinking and apply it to the needs of the organization. The educational experience I gained from the African Studies program strengthened my skills in critical thinking and research, opened opportunities and fostered my individual interests.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6557\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/africanstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sagalkhandid.bmp\" alt=\"sagalkhandid\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My name is Sagal Khandid and I graduated in 2013 with a double major in African Studies and Political Science from Carleton University.
